Science

Here at the Linden Academy, we make science lessons practical and engaging for our children. The Principles of Science underpin our planning and teaching of Science across school. These ensure that children can generate their own questions, lead their own science investigations and use scientific language to explain their findings.

The Principles of Science are:

• Developing scientific skills and knowledge

• Using lots of different resources effectively

• A range of practical tasks

• Purposeful and relates to modern life

• Inspirational to pupils and adults.

• Access to greater depth thinking

• Well prepared

• Visual

A range of topics are covered across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The National Curriculum states that children should be given the opportunity to work scientifically and investigate through practical activities to make discoveries of their own about Science. Through this, children will develop their scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding. Children will have the opportunity to plan experiments, look at their findings and from this decide what to investigate next.

Across each key stage, some of the topics are revisited with a deeper understanding so that children can develop learning from previous years. The topics covered across the school are:

  • Animals, Including Humans
  • Everyday Materials/ Properties and Changes of Materials
  • Seasonal Changes
  • Living Things and Their Habitats
  • Plants
  • Rocks
  • Light
  • Electricity
  • Sound
  • Magnets and Forces
  • Earth and Space
  • Evolution and Inheritance
